The Hoya UV was the first UV filter used on our Canon 7D. It is a great filter and performed well, other than coming lose a few times on shoots. The only reason we had to upgrade it was because we noticed on a shoot a deep scratch that was showing up in some shots. We were very glad to see only the UV filter had gotten scratched and not our expensive lens. This lens filter was cheaper then camera insurance and well worth the price we paid.

B+W 52mm UV IR Cut with Multi Resistant Coating

B+H 52mm UV/IR Cut with Multi-Resistant Coating $75.50

B+W 77mm UV IR Cut with Multi Resistant Coating

B+H 77mm UV/IR Cut with Multi-Resistant Coating $156.50

After losing our first UV filter to a random deep scratch, we decided to try one of the higher end UV filters to compare the difference. Right off we were immediately impressed with the filters precision and glass quality. The difference between this filter and the lower quality UV filter is very noticeable right off in both build quality and shots taken. I would have to say we are very happy with our upgrade. We do have to mention unless you directly compared 2 exact same shots taken through both filters the difference wouldn’t bother the average video photographer on a budget.

This B+W Interference Filter has a completely colorless glass carrier coated with a number of extremely thin, partially reflecting layers with precisely computed thicknesses, similar to MRC coating. It does not block by means of absorption, but by interference of the unwanted UV and IR radiation that is repeatedly reflected between these layers, affecting the wavelengths on both sides of the visible spectrum with a steep cut-off. It is used mainly on digital and video cameras with CCD sensors without an integrated IR protection filter, because the IR sensitivity of the CCD sensor would otherwise cause color changes and un-sharpness. That un-sharpness results from the chromatic aberration of the lenses that are only corrected for visible light. In the visible range, the transmission curve is very high and straight. This filter is completely clear and it requires no increase in exposure. It has a filter factor of 1.
