Part 6 of an 8 Part Series on How to Create a Website – Create and Upload Videos.

Previously in create and upload videos part 5 we talked about lighting and CFL light kits. In part 6 we will be talking about some things to keep in mind when buying videographer lighting kits.

Buying Videographer Lighting Kits

When buying a lighting kit, at first glance it’s like anything else you get what you paid for. There is actually another consideration or perspective to look at. When you can’t afford the top gear, you are required to make some sacrifices. Namely you have to purchase the economy kits. You will read the bad reviews where people talk of low quality products they received when purchasing low price cheap lighting kits. You will also read positive reviews as well. What this means is because this is the cheapest of the cheap, the lighting kit manufacturer more than likely has very low quality control if any at all.

Some people get good units and others get bad. So it is possible to get a cheap low cost light kit that works well, but it’s also a gamble that you are going to be one of the people that can get a defective unit that doesn’t. Many manufacturers of quality products have great quality control and catch all the defective units leaving their factories. What you don’t know is they actually had to tag 25 to 40% of their inventory as defective and it is sent back to the factory to be refurbished.

With the cost of overseas manufacturing so cheap, these companies still make a profit. This is because these quality companies can use the same manufacturing processes as the cheaper companies, but allocated more of their profits to quality control in their pricing. There are many kits like these. We recommend browsing their selection and finding one that meets your needs. Each has different strengths, such as all three lights having the option of being the same wattage. Some videographers feel there is no need for the over head hair light being so powerful. Others feel they want the option of the extra wattage.

The high end lighting kits go beyond cutting corners. These companies build a quality product from day one. Like all products these companies also must pay attention to quality control, but they operate on a whole different level of product. These kits are built from the start to last for years. They are the luxury car of the videographer lighting world. These lighting kits have far more options and conveniences then found in entry level products. As an example remote controlled independent lighting or best in class 85 Watt 5500K CRI 90% bulbs. These kits are made for the professional that knows what they want and want to get setup fast and right.

The way to look on this decision is to know if you get a quality rig at $220.00 you can always expand the wattage of the lights. The expensive kit only comes with 3 more built in lights. There is no reason the lower end kit can’t use the same 85 Watt 5500K CRI 90% bulbs at $20.00 or so each.

So you can walk away from this with the understanding that if you are willing to do your research or take a few chances you can get a quality lighting system at a cheap price. The alternative is to get the right quality kit from the start, because time is money and sometimes things end up costing just as much in your time.
