Part 4 of an 8 Part Series on How to Create a Website – Create and Upload Videos.
Previously in create and upload videos part 3 we talked about how to pull focus inexpensively. In part 4 we will be covering more essential tools such as tripods, microphones and leading into lighting.
One of the easiest mistakes you can make is picking the wrong tripod. So many times we hear of someone paying between $100.00 to $400.00 for a tripod only to find out that there are better solutions for silky smooth panning shots.
The secret behind the silky smooth panning shot, is selecting a good Fluid Video Head. Anyone who has used a standard tripod will notice that no matter how smooth you try to pan a fully loosen standard tripod, they always seem to click or pop the movement. This is very distracting for the viewer and is another aspect that gives that over all amateur feel to your video.
When you compare the price of high end or low end video tripod solutions, you will not give standard photography tripods a second look.
On the low end you have the all in one solution the Ravelli AVT Professional Tripod with fluid drag head and on the high end you have 2 pieces the tripod Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs and Manfrotto 701HDV Pro Fluid Video Mini Head. At nearly 3 times the cost the 2 piece Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs and Manfrotto 701HDV Pro Fluid Video Mini Head is the acknowledged leader.
Many videographers will tell you, the quality of your video means nothing if the sound is amateur. When creating a website video it is actually the quality of the microphone and lighting that makes the most difference. Here we will cover the choices Domain-Cheap.com faced when researching the products on the market for its own video production needs.
One of the first questions we always get is “why do we need a microphone if we already have a webcam or DSLR with a built in microphone. The answer is quality. The built in microphone on most cameras is just that, built in.
The trouble with this is most built in microphones are cheap and cannot move closer to the subject being filmed without moving the camera closer and changing the shot. The reason you must move the microphone closer to the subject is because if the microphone is further away from the subject it will pick up every sound in the room. One of the worst sounds in the room it will pick up is the reflected sound of the subject speaking as their voice is reflected off the walls as it makes its way back to the camera microphone. This creates that hollow amateur sound heard in b-rated movies and amateur online videos. This can be very distracting from your message. Like quality graphics people are not always aware of why they don’t trust a message, they just DON’T.
Getting the correct microphone for the job is important and it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. There are multiple options in microphones used in creating website videos. One is the condenser microphone that sits on your desk like you see a lot of radio announcers use. Another and preferred version is the discreet lapel microphone. The lapel microphone has better sound in our opinion because it is positioned closest to your chest and mouth. They attach by being clipped onto your shirt or jacket collar.
The desktop condenser microphone does have great quality sound, but it is fixed to one position and cannot move freely with you as you speak unless it is dragged or pivoted. The desktop condenser microphone does have one quality video production users love, PRESENTATION!!! Condenser microphones have the most professional appearance of all microphones, with their pop filters and shock mounts. Many users even get a sort of security, hiding behind these large microphones when they create a website video.
Another microphone often used in field work, is the directional video condenser microphone. This microphone is very much like aiming a gun at your target and only catching predominately their voice. For this purpose we recommend the Rode videomic directional video condenser microphone with optional Rode Dead cat wind muff to kill surprising wind sounds.
