How to Create a Website Step 17 Website Submissions
Web directories have a long history on the internet and for some they are the birth place of certain search engines. In the very early days Google indexed all the websites found in DMOZ.org and relied on it heavily for review of quality websites. This is because DMOZ.org is a human run directory. Each listing in DMOZ is reviewed by a volunteer before it displayed. Everything from the website to the title and description are scrutinized by the volunteer editor.
Google and many other search engines saw DMOZ as a gold mine of quality web content. Now days this is still true, but too much less an extent. In fact some would say the internet has now passed up DMOZ. We get so many reports of customers with quality websites and products submitting to DMOZ only to not see or hear anything further.
We do get reports of some activity, but nothing compared to the old days. Just looking through DMOZ at the number of categories with an active (Volunteer for this category) link, tells you all is not well in DMOZ. This doesn’t change the authority DMOZ still carries to this day. It is well understood if you get in DMOZ you stand a strong chance in the search engines. So we recommend to all customers it’s got better odds then the lottery and can pay off for you the same. Take a chance and submit because you can’t win if you don’t play.
Next we would have to recommend submitting to the Yahoo directory. It is $300.00 per submission per year as stated by yahoo, but people can and do get listed for free or for a onetime fee of $300.00. Being listed in Yahoo for many does not yield direct traffic from the directory itself. If does how ever have an influence on search engine rankings, especially with Yahoo search.
Next and we believe final authority directory is BOTW.org (Best of the Web). BOTW also costs $300.00 per year per site. It has been our experience with BOTW.org they have little tolerance for failure. We have heard horror stories of websites getting hacked and before the business can recover they get de-indexed by BOTW.org. The official explanation from BOTW.org is they looked for the website and it wasn’t found. What does this mean to the business owners. They must appeal the findings or resubmit for $300.00. In most cases BOTW.org will recheck the website to see if its back up and display it again. In defense of BOTW.org they are here to provide the best possible quality listings and if a website is infected with a virus or down, then this is not good for their listings.
Finally a great source of authority is submitting to a CSS gallery best website award listing. As an example a CSS gallery accepts CSS design submissions of cutting edge web design. Over at CSSGallery.com they not only list best website awards for CSS design, but they also have the largest most complete list of all the other CSS galleries on the internet. Getting listed in CSSGallery.com can cause a chain reaction getting your website indexed into hundreds of other CSS design award websites and the beauty of it all, in many cases its FREE!
Many probably notice we didn’t mention search engine submissions. With modern search technology search engine submissions are a thing of the past. Search engines index all new domains registered and they are already targeted for the search engine spiders to come pay you a visit. So save your money and don’t pay to submit to search engines.
In conclusion web submissions are a great source of gaining authority. Like anything else you must be careful and attentive to your business and be ready to respond if your website gets hacked. This is why we offer website monitoring systems to assist in the defense of your web design.
